Phuket is now the main beach resort destination of Thailand, comprising of nine white sandy beaches, mostly looking out over the Emerald colored Andaman Sea. The hotels in Patong, Karon, Kata, Bang Thao (Laguna), Kamala, Rawai and Surin vary enormously from budget beach huts to multistory tour group resorts and sumptuous Thai retreats for the rich and famous. Phuket Town provides the best value and greatest range of shopping, while Chalong Bay (near sacred Wat Chalong) is scuba diving central and where you can find the ferries to Koh Phi Phi. Koh Phuket as it should be called as it is an island linked to Phang-Nga and the mainland by a bridge is actually the wealthiest province in the whole of Thailand. Several villas and holiday home rentals are also now available for short term rent by tourists, although the vast majority of tourism beds on Phuket are in hotels.
