Bali's Seminyak & Canggu Beach Advice Guide
The beach running north from Legian does tend to get a little narrower in places. There are still beach sales people plying this area, but noticeably fewer than in Legian. Again, as with the Kuta area, waves from the Indian Ocean make swimming difficult and sometimes dangerous. Unlike Kuta / Legian, most of the beach hotels here are actually on the beach.
The whole area is a lot quieter then Kuta / Legian, though it is only a few minutes ride from these areas. With most of the hotels offering complimentary shuttles to Kuta, this makes Seminyak a better choice for many people who simply want access to the shops / entertainment further south. Not actually sleep / stay amongst it.
Seminyak is actually a favorite with the local "ex-pat" community, due to the large number of highly rated restaurants in this area (e.g. The Living Room, KuDeTa, Made's Warung, Gado Gado, La Lucciola & Warisan). The shopping in Seminyak is also much better then Legian, etc. for crafts, hand made and fashionable items. Seminyak beach uses a local road system well off of the main road. There are therefore less traffic associated problems.
The area just north of Legian along and just off the main road north can be described as Seminyak Town. It is very similar to Legian. Although this area has a beach (south of the Imperial Hotel), it is much more cramped then "Seminyak Beach" (the area north of the Imperial).
Kerobokan is a small village on the coast, just north of Seminyak and using a branch of the same local road system that serves Seminyak Beach. However, it is only just outside and trips to Seminyak and further south are relatively easy. It is a fairly isolated area with even fewer beach vendors although, they do still exist.
Once you go north of Kerobokan, you have to use a different road system. Basically, you have to travel further up the main road and then head out towards Tanah Lot. What this means in real terms is an extra 10 to 20 minutes added onto your journey time to Seminyak / Legian / Kuta. This area increasingly suffers less and less from tourism as you head away from the south. Which means less fellow tourists, fewer local tourist facilities, and fewer beach vendors. What is more, the beach vendors here tend to be artists and carvers selling their own products. Not fake Rolex watches like they do around Kuta.
Just beyond Canggu is Tanah Lot, which you will find listed in our Other Bali Areas Guide.
We donate all of our direct reservation earnings from the hotels and villas on our site to a charity in Bali, which helps deprived Balinese children. When you book with and then stay and pay a hotel or villa in the Seminyak to Canggu area directly via our site you are basically making a donation to a very worthy cause at the same time, thank you (see our charity page).
